Sunshine, Stories and Recovery: A Walk-and-Talk Event in Falmouth for Mental Health Week

Exploring Recovery and Connection Outdoors
Last week, during Mental Health Awareness Week, the Ara Recovery For All Southwest team hosted a special event in the stunning coastal town of Falmouth. We invited professionals, community organisations, and individuals to join us for a walk-and-talk session focused on recovery and what it means to each of us.
When we started planning this event back in February, we were surrounded by grey skies and cold weather. So we were thrilled to be met with sunshine on the day, making the experience even more uplifting and memorable.
Meaningful Conversations by the Sea
The walk was designed to be more than just time outdoors. It was a space for open conversation about gambling harm and recovery, shared among a diverse group of people.
We were especially honoured to be joined by people with lived experience and affected others, who generously shared their stories and insights. These personal accounts brought a deeper level of connection and understanding that simply can’t be replicated through presentations alone.
To encourage reflection, we introduced ‘chat stops’ along the route. At each point, we posed questions such as “What does recovery mean to you?” to help spark conversations and invite new perspectives.
Sharing Food and Continuing the Conversation
After the walk, we gathered for lunch at St. Michaels Resort. The beautiful setting offered a relaxed space to continue our conversations, strengthen relationships, and reflect on the themes of the day.
In line with our values, any surplus food from the event was donated to local charities in the Falmouth area. This is something we’re committed to doing at all of our events across the Southwest.
Community, Compassion, and Storytelling
What made this event so powerful was the people. The courage and openness of those who shared personal experiences created moments of genuine connection. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who took part and helped shape the day.
Thank you also to Boosters Limited for providing event merchandise, and to our dedicated Southwest team — Lindsey Taylor, Charanjeet Singh, Kai McConkey, Hayley Dinham, and Adele Bourne — for making it all happen.
