Gambling harms are hiding in plain sight
Today’s young people are growing up in a world where gambling is everywhere. From loot boxes in video games and betting ads on social media, to sponsorship deals woven into the sports they love, gambling has become a normal part of everyday life for many young people, often without them even realising it.
Without the right awareness and support, these early exposures can lead to harmful gambling behaviours later in life. That’s why early education matters.
The hidden risks young people face
Gaming Overlap
Many young people encounter gambling elements within video games, such as loot boxes, blurring the lines between gaming and gambling.
Social Media Ads
Platforms like Instagram and TikTok frequently display gambling advertisements, increasing exposure among young people.
Sports Sponsorship
Partnerships between gambling companies and sports teams make gambling appear as a normal part of sports culture, influencing young fans.
Unsupervised Access
The shift to online platforms reduces adult oversight, allowing young people to engage with gambling activities without guidance or restriction.
Free Workshops and Resources
Ahead of the Game delivers expert-led, interactive sessions tailored to your setting. Our workshops are completely free and available across Wales and the South West.
