We’re looking for people who want to support others while developing their own skills and confidence.
Ara Recovery for All has launched its Peer Academy and we’re looking for more Volunteer Peer Mentors to join our team.
This role gives you the chance to make a difference while working on your own personal and professional growth.
This role is open to anyone with lived experience of recovery from substance use and homelessness who:
· Has been in recovery for at least 6 months
· Feels they are in a stable place in their own recovery
· Is ready to support people in the early stages of recovery
What You’ll Do
- Support people 1:1, offering encouragement and understanding
- Help clients set goals and build confidence
- Share practical skills, like budgeting, cooking, or using digital tools
- Optionally co-facilitate group sessions and activities
- Be a positive role model and show that recovery is possible
- Always work safely and keep professional boundaries

Who We’re Looking For
You don’t need previous experience or qualifications — just:
- Lived experience of recovery (substance use)
- Empathy, reliability, and a non-judgemental attitude
- Willingness to learn, attend training, and work as part of a team
- Commitment to boundaries, safeguarding, and confidentiality
Training
All Peer Mentors complete Phase 1 Training — a 6-week programme (two half-days per week) covering safeguarding, boundaries, group work, and supporting others safely.
After this, you can begin mentoring with supervision and, if you want, move on to Phase 2 for further development with accredited qualifications, apprenticeships, and career coaching.
